A tree in the parking lot Of a commercial complex- Lovely, flowering in spring, Leaving a sprinkle of red petals occasionally, When jostling playfully with the barmy winds, On the driveway and on the cars’ windscreens. A beauty for sure For nature lovers and For the cuckoo which Used its branches to perch and sing persistent notes of melancholy for the romantic hearts at our workplace in the complex. Then one day a storm raged and A couple of large branches broke and fell On a few cars parked in the driveway. The poor tree had no way to prevent The damage done to the cars. Yet, it had to face the human wrath! “The tree is a pest,an annoyance”, they cried! “Occupying useless space, not worth at all!” Forgotten was the beauty, The benefits; So much for human foresight! The tree was cut down; Chopped to the last inch of the protruding trunk. Now the cuckoo’s voice is never heard. Nor do the sprinkle of sudden red On the cars’ body Enthrall the nature lovers. Only some extra noise and fume From some additional parked cars And the ringing cash in the complex’s cash box.

You are quite gifted in that your poetry tells a whole story with elegant poetic imagery–as we say in the US, “the full-meal deal” 🙂

I am actually a bit lazy and cannot get down to writing prose/short stories. Besides my poetry is more about the happenings around me, things that knock on the doors of my heart. Most of the times they are bereft of a plot good enough to weave into a story. So I put them down in poetry. Am happy that you like it so much. Thank you for all your words of praise and encouragement. 🙂

Oh I doubt you’re lazy–it’s truly a gift to create the poetry you write; it’s quite unique in style–I’ve not come across any other like it that I can recall, in 9 years of blogging. You’re very welcome–I think I like writing comments as much as poems 🙂

A sign of the times Goutam. Man does not care about Nature’s habitat, the lack of birdsong, nor the beauty of a single tree. A lovely poem today.

A wonderful piece expressing life’s undesirable side where greed reigns above all. My own thoughts are Mother nature has her ways to wreak havoc and perhaps, some karma is due. lol Thank you for participating.

Yes….you are very correct. The havoc is already being felt everywhere. Yesterday we had unprecedented rains in the Indian city of Hyderabad, 10 times more than the highest ever recorded. A friend had to spend all night on the roads, in his car. At least in India we are witnessing cyclones growing stronger and increase in numbers…Nature fighting back now, I guess. Thank you for your thought-provoking prompt. 😊
